Ronin: A HeroRAT’s Unfinished Mission Amidst Border Tensions in Cambodia

Today, we bring you an update from the front lines of humanitarian demining in Cambodia, where our incredible HeroRATs, particularly the record-breaking Ronin, are making a profound difference. However, their vital work has recently faced unforeseen challenges due to regional instability.

A Pause for Safety: Evacuation from Preah Vihear

In late July, the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) alerted APOPO of the escalating conflict near the Cambodia–Thailand border. With reports of heavy weapons fire just 20 kilometers from APOPO’s operations in Preah Vihear Province, the safety of their dedicated teams and beloved animals became paramount. APOPO made the difficult but necessary decision to evacuate all staff and animals from the area.

All demining operations in the region are currently paused as APOPO closely monitor the situation with CMAC and local authorities. We all hope for a swift and peaceful resolution, allowing the HeroRATs to return to their life-saving work soon.

Ronin: A Record-Breaking Hero in the Making

Despite these recent setbacks, we have incredible news to share regarding Ronin. Operating in Preah Vihear Province, Cambodia, since August 2021, Ronin has officially achieved the Guinness World Records title for the most landmines detected by a rat!

With an impressive count of 109 landmines and 15 items of unexploded ordnance (UXO) already detected, Ronin has surpassed the legendary HeroRAT Magawa, who identified 71 landmines and 38 UXOs during his five-year service. What makes Ronin’s achievement even more remarkable is that at just five years old, he may have two years or more of detection work ahead of him, continuing to build on his already staggering total.

We are incredibly proud of Ronin and all the HeroRATs and their human handlers. We remain committed to our mission in Cambodia and look forward to the day when Ronin and his colleagues can safely resume their vital work in Preah Vihear Province.
