HeroRAT Ronin: Supporting Landmine Detection in Cambodia

Last month, Reservoir, Yoga & Wellness Retreat decided to adopt Ronin, one of the HeroRAT at Apopo as we believe on putting our profits in a useful cause.

Last month Ronin was hard at work helping to clear dangerous land in Preah Vihear province, Cambodia. As part of Mine Detection Rat Team 02, Ronin played a crucial role in making farmland safe again, helping clear 7,370 square meters—an area equivalent to nearly 30 tennis courts. In just 19 days of work, spending no more than 30 minutes per day, he successfully detected 1 landmine, bringing communities one step closer to safety and prosperity.

2024 was another incredible year for Ronin! In 12 months, he was busy helping clear 70,415 square meters of land—that’s about 270 tennis fields. Along the way, he sniffed out 23 landmines (an impressive 22% of his team’s total detections!) and 5 explosive remnants of war (ERWs), including dangerous items like grenades, artillery shells, or mortar rounds.

Ronin is just one member of Mine Detection Rat Team 02, which includes 10 HeroRATs and their handlers working in Preah Vihear. Together, they cleared 1,736,060 square meters of land, uncovering 104 landmines and 44 ERWs—making a huge difference for local families who can now farm and live safely.

Ronin’s sharp nose and tireless work ethic have truly made an impact this year.
